Multidisciplinary investigations at a small fourteenth and fifteenth century Mississippian village in northeastern Georgia are summarized. Changes in village organization, subsistence, and relative population health are evident over the approximately two centuries of occupation.

Soapstone Ridge is a geological entity situated in southern DeKalb County, Georgia. Numerous Archaic steatite quarry and workshop sites have been located on the Ridge. Interstate 675 is being proposed to follow an, existing developed transportation corridor north-south across the Ridge.

The project was located on the Red Hill 7.5' U.S.G.S. topographic map. The site files at Georgia State University and the University of Georgia showed no archaeological sites in the vicinity of the project.

Field examination disclosed that the portion from S.R. 41 south into Marietta was in a heavily developed area. The portion from U.S. 41 to the interchange with 1-75 was under thick pine cover. The most likely site type for a ridge area in this portion of Georgia is the lithic station.

The widening of US 301 through Claxton may affect two brick structures located just south of the S.C.L. tracks. The building on the east side of the highway is a two story brick business building erected in 1921.

A survey to determine the cultural resources of the project was made by the Environmental Analysis Bureau's staff archaeologist. The project is entirely within an urban area. A small creek along Alternate I was examined with no archaeological evidence produced.
