This reply is concerning Project number PR-7243, FultonClayton Counties Negative Declaration.

On the basis of information obtained through archaeological survey, it seems unlikely that anything of historic or prehistoric significance would be affected by the completion of this project.

A two-member SSI archaeology team began the survey of the Clayton County temporary workspace on July 22, 1976. Precise workspace boundaries were field located by a representative of the Colonial Pipeline Company, and the precise survey area was delineated.

Since March 4th, the inventory files of other archeological institutions and the files of the Historic Preservation Section have been obtained and checked-off against the project maps.

9Da104 and 9Da69 are Late Archaic (3000-1000 B.C.) steatite workshop and quarry sites, respectively, located between 1-285, West Side Place, and Henrico Road south of Atlanta on the large ultra-mafic intrusion known as Soapstone Ridge.

Artifactual evidence from this site is meager indeed.. The surface collection included a piece of worked light grey chert and two quartz flakes. A single quartz flake was found in 4S, OE. No conclusions about time period, site type, etc. can really be formed on.

This proposal is considered to be consistent with those State goals, policies, objectives, plans, programs and fiscal resources with which this organization is concerned.

Southern Research, Historic Preservation Consultants, Inc. has conducted the Phase I Cultural

Resources Survey of the proposed senior housing development at Sterling Heights in Macon,

Site 9-Cn-48, located on a high hill well back from a branch of Pate's Creek, yielded several artifacts typical of the Paleo Indian Period (?-8,000 B.C.).
