Site 9LG79 is located on the northern edge of Buck Island, which is a complex riverine sand ridge in the midst of the vast Altamaha River swamp (Figures 1 and 2). The ridge, or island, is nearly a kilometer wide in places and is about 5 km long. It is the first major ridge from the river.
