New South Associates conducted a Phase I archaeological survey on September 18 and 22, 1998 of 2.9 km (1.8 miles) of new alignment for the proposed Octagon Road in Henry County. The project corridor, on that date, was defined as having a 30 m (100 feet) right-of-way.

In October 2001, Brockington and Associates, Inc., conducted intensive archaeological resources survey at the proposed bridge replacement in Marion County, Georgia. This investigation was carried out under contract with The LP A Group, Inc., for the Georgia Department of Transportation.

The proposed project would widen S.R.72 between the intersection of S.R.72 and S.R.17 and the intersection of S.R.72/College Avenue and Oliver Street in Elberton. Existing right-of-way along S.R.72 varies from 60 feet to a maximum of 100 feet.
